The Martial Arts has been around for ages, and there has been a lot of speculation as to just what martial art did knights use. This has been the subject of many movies over the years, such as, “Rocky Balboa”, “Catch Me If You Can” and “The Karate Kid.” But, no one really knows the real answer. Here’s a look at some of the things that have been speculated about and how true they are.
One thing that has been written about is that swords were used by knights. There’s even a piece of artwork called, “The Knight’s Shield,” that is a recreation of what the shield used to look like. However, this was a reconstruction and not an actual ancient shield. So, again, we cannot be sure if it was used by knights. We do know that there were swords, so it could have been used as a substitute for other weapons.
Knives have also been mentioned in regards to fighting. Whether they actually worked is up for debate. It’s more likely that they were more of a form of weaponry than a fighting tool. Some would say they were a necessity, however, they were a very effective method of cutting during the times when knives were not common. And they could be used much more easily than cutting tools of the time.
Guns were also mentioned in regards to a possible martial art. One movie said that knights used them to shoot crossbows at their enemies. However, there isn’t really any evidence to suggest this, nor is it mentioned in any book on the subject. One thing that does stand clear though, is the fact that guns were used during the French Revolution. A popular saying is that, “Guns are great for shooting crossbows, but they don’t work very well when you’re trying to punch someone in the face.” The reason for this was because the arms of some of the Frenchmen were too large, which made using a sword to defend themselves impractical.
Knives and guns were only two items used in the past for self defense. Today they aren’t as common as they once were, and many people have found them to be unnecessary and even dangerous. The main reason for this is the lack of deadly force through the use of many martial arts. Most karate and judo styles don’t really pack much punch, and there are far more strikes and throws available for those who want to take the fight to the ground.
So back to the original question, “what martial art did knights use?” Well, there wasn’t really a specific art. It was more of a way of life, though. Many soldiers used to carry their favorite piece of equipment, which usually was a sword. They would practice with it, and at night they would sleep with it. Even though the blade was only ten inches long, it could surely do a lot, if one had the proper equipment.
